Perhaps on the list of qualities you DON’T want in a safety consultant is that of “humourless academic”. These types of ineffective consults almost never capture the hearts and minds of the very people who need to be safe, the workers. Safety creating activities become boring with little joy and are usually limited to discussions about what some anonymously created Safety Standard with some big number attached to it requires someone to do because it’s “on the audit”. The problem I see with the “humourless” is their inability to see the humour in the human condition that can assist greatly in creating and maintaining a safe culture. The lack of humour should be reserved for the “unsafe” condition of a culture. This is most often where the safety academic wallows. There is certainly no humour it that. Safe is a very happy state. Keep smiling everyone!
